The gallery is one among the three main art galleries of Australia and the lone one in Sydney. The building itself is worth some attention with its magnificent Greek columns and adorned with drapes, announcing the arrival of latest additions to the gallery. This is reminiscent of the Metropolitan in New York, but in a smaller scale.

The gallery was built more than a century back in 1884 and renovated a century later. Built in the classical style, the art gallery proclaims its intentions loud and clear. Though century-old exhibits rub shoulders with modern art, the design, setting and the interior of the building let this happen without a hitch. In 1971, the space for exhibition was almost doubled due to the ever-increasing number of exhibits. In 1988, an additional wing was built named Captain Cook Bicentenary Wing.

The exhibits are segregated according to their origin. The Australian Collection has the maximum representation with the works of early European settlers. Works of both sculptors and painters find space in the gallery. The exhibits in this section include McCubbin’s On The Wallaby Track (1896) and Roberts’ The Golden Fleece (1894).

The Captain Cook Wing has works from the 20th century. Here again, the Australian artists have more representation.

The Yiribana Gallery located on the third level displays works by Australia’s Aboriginal artists. This gallery also houses craft items produced by them centuries back. The Western Collection is comparatively smaller, but has some gems that are of interest to art lovers. Italian and Dutch works of the 16th century and some from the Victorian era in the 19th century adorn this section.
